ISLAMABAD: A six-member Turkish expedition, including two women, made history on July 22 when its members scaled Gashebrum-II.

Kamal Gur, the Turkish Ambassador in Islamabad, held a special reception in honour of the climbers at the Embassy on Monday. The reception was attended by a large number of people including diplomatic community, mountaineers and the office-bearers of Alpine Club of Pakistan. The team led by Serhan Pocan (electronic engineer) comprised professionals who graduated from one of the most prestigious universities of Turkey, Middle East Technical University (METU). The other team members were Ms Doctor Dr Brucak Onoglu, Dr Bora Mevis (both lecturers), Ms Elif Eylem Koc (project manager), Soner Buyukatalay, and Serkan Girgin (both PhD students).

This was the first-ever Turkish expedition and was arranged in connection with the celebrations of the 85th Turkish Grand National Assembly.

According to details provided by the Pakistan Tourism Ministry, some 200 mountaineers tried the above 8,000-metre peak Gasherbrum-II and only 13 individuals were lucky enough to return successful. And out of these total 13, six were Turkish. At the reception, the Turkish expedition announced that they would now try the most dangerous peak of Pakistan – K-2.
